Gender Intro

So far this semester this class has reinforced some of the things that I already believe about Gender. I have always hated the way some people are ridiculed for not being living up to what society believes they should be just because they are a certain race. I love diversity and people who break the mold and chose the way they want to live. Not every male has to like football and basketball and not every female has to enjoy cooking and watching talk shows. I wish that everyone would embrace the differences between people that are bound to happen in society. The world would be a better place if people were able to just be themselves and were not pressured to be manly and or feminine so that they could fit in. In the 3rd reading in Kaleidoscope we read about how gender is seen as black and white, one or the other, the same way that sex is. I don't like that gender is seen this way. I think that it is okay for people to be able to just like certain things regardless of whatever gender they may be. Also, I don't believe gender should be seen as being so permanent. Why does someone have to identify with a particular gender. Some days people may just feel like being themselves and not having to identify or make a choice about what and who they identify with. In the reading we also talked about parents choosing their childrens' sex when there is ambiguity. Why does a choice have to be made. I believe that the child should be able to just grow and be who they are, and if they feel that they need surgery then they should be able to make that decision as an adult.
